Exposed Layers

by Clare O’Driscoll

Sir John Soame was known for his ‘radical colour schemes’ which have been recreated at Pitzhanger Manor by analysing paint samples.

I have always been fascinated by layers of peeling paint or wallpaper, which have been witness to so much history of a space. If only the walls could talk…

There is something magical about the idea of hidden layers, imagining secret messages written below the layers. Layers of paint or wallpaper seem to chart the history of taste and style and decor, peeling back a layer to expose garish colours from a previous decade.

The paint on this radiator peels back to expose the metal underneath.

Which reminds me of this new nail polish that creates the same effect.
