I am a creative anomaly, hard to categorise but with a constant desire to ‘make’ or create, through my work I aim to champion the underdog. I currently hand stitch three dimensional insect collections, working with locally sourced materials.
Claire Moynihan meticulously hand embroiders British insects onto felt balls, which are beautifully presented as entomological collections. Claire processes local alpaca wool to produce the felt balls and stitches larger than life insects onto the surface. This allows the viewer to appreciate the diverse details of the insect world through Claire’s careful observations and intricate embroidery. The highly collectable works aim to celebrate the underrated moth and the valuable contribution of insects to our fragile ecosystem.
Claire’s work has been exhibited widely and most recently at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and at The Courtauld Gallery as part of their Cabinet of Curiosities. Her work is available through Paul Smith, Liberty and by commission.
